It's old, but it's good. / 4
No question about it - Neil Young is one of the greatest musicians of our (or any) time. And Rust Never Sleeps is proof of this. It's my second-favorite Neil Young CD, behind only Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere.
The first side of this album is 100% acoustic, featuring Pocahontas (one of Neil's alltime best ballads) and My My hey Hey (Into the Blue), his tribute to rock, where he declares it's here to stay, like it or not. Another fine ballad to be found here is Trasher, though it is a tiny bit too long.
But Side 2, the electric side, is where Rust Never Sleeps really shines. Four pre-grunge rockers make up this side, one of them (Powderfinger) being a candidate for Neil's best song, period. It's certainly his best-written. And let's not forget Hey Hey My My (Into the Black), the electric reprise of acoustic My My Hey Hey (Out of the Blue), a brilliant idea. Between these two are a pair of good-not-great rockers, Sedan Delivery and Welfare Mothers, which (along with Sail Away, another average song) are the reasons why this gets four stars instead of five.
But when all is said and done, Rust Never Sleeps is a must-have. Also recommended for Neil Young fans:
Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere (Neil Young)
After the Gold Rush (Neil Young)
Harvest (Neil Young)
Deja Vu (Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young)
Retrospective (Buffalo Springfield)
OK, now to straighten a few things out for Da Peace Dogg's sake...
1. Johnny Rotten sang for the Sex Pistols, not the Ramones.
2. Def Leppard released their first album in 1980. Rust Never Sleeps came out in 1979. So if anything, Def Leppard ripped off the line "It's better to burn out than it is to rust" from Neil Young.
3. Neil Young is in his mid-sixties, not exactly one of today's youth.
Just thought you'd like to know this...
And to Reginald Musgrave "bovine", you are welcome!!!

Song "Danger Bird"
Danger bird, he flies alone
And he rides the wind
back to his home
Although his wings
have turned to stone

And we used
to be so calm
Now I think
about you
all day long
'Cause you've been
with another man
Here you are
and here I am.

That's the moment
that he cracked
long ago in the
museum with his
friends.

The jailbird takes the raps
And he finds himself
spread-eagled on the tracks
But the training that he learned
will get him nowhere fast.

And I know we
should be free
But freedom's just
a prison to me
'Cause I lied
to keep it kind
When I left you
far behind.

With the rain
pounding on his
back he recalls
the moment that
he cracked long
ago in the museum
with his friends.
And like those
memories the rain
keeps pounding
down, down, down.

And though these wings
have turned to stone
I can fly fly fly away.
Watch me fly above the city
Like a shadow on the sky.
Fly, fly, fly.
