Solid release, but nothing mindblowing / 3
If you're a huge fan of JLT, of course this is a must buy....well, maybe not at the ridiculous price listed here. I got mine for free, thank goodness. Anyway, I (think) I own all his solo studio recordings; and upon first listen, nothing really stood out apart from the brilliant ballad "Heart Against Heart" (which easily is one of his best, alongside "Endlessly", "Love Conquers All", and "Mystery Of The Heart") and the rocking, melodic "Forever Changed".
The focus here seems to be Japanese guitarist Akira Kajiyama, who I assume wrote the music and did a lot of the work, since it's not a Joe solo album. Akira also played on JLT's "Holy Man" CD from 2000 if I'm not mistaken. A bit of the Blackmore sound is heard, who I am sure is a big influence.
Fire Without Flame is quite similar musically to Holy Man. Hard rock with a blues edge...but I did enjoy this release and will likely listen to it again a few times. The lack of keyboards, personally, is a big detriment to Joe's voice and I seriously doubt he'll ever top the brilliant Rescue You from '85.
