My All-Time Favorite Album / 5
At first hearing "Bring Me To Life" on the radio, I was less than impressed. It was too dark, too unappealing. Then, as the years passed and it somehow remained a favorite of multiple stations, I started to like it. I looked it up on Napster but sadly Evanescence was not a featured band. About a year later I looked them up on Yahoo and watched the music video to "My Immortal". That was when I realized, "Wow...this band is more talented than I thought!" From there my love of their music grew until I finally (after looking at two WAL*MARTS, a Target, and Barnes & Noble) found it used at a little music store. It has since become my favorite album by a mile.
For one thing, Amy Lee is incredible. I think some people tend to overlook just how talented she really is. She could have any kind of musical career with a voice like that, including opera. The fact that she is a wonderful songwriter and pianist makes her every producer's dream I'm sure.
Ben Moody is also a talented musician and songwriter. He really had lot going in this band, I don't know why he would switch to co-writing for Avril Lavigne.
The songs are just so deep and emotional. They're not light and fluffy, they really have feeling behind them. Here are my ratings for each song:
1. "Going Under" - 5/5 stars - "Going Under" is a hard rock song with kind of a creepy edge. It's good enough by itself, but I recommend watching the music video, too. You can find it on Yahoo.
2. "Bring Me To Life" - 5/5 stars - My favorite song on the album. It's kind of dark and has a rock edge, but it's also kind of romantic in a way. The switching between Paul McCoy of 12 Stones and Amy Lee's vocals is my favorite part of the song. But the entire song shows off both of their vocals. I recommend seeing the music video, too.
3. "Everybody's Fool" - 4.5/5 stars - This song is about how fake Hollywood is, and how the fluff and glamor that magazines show is just all a lie. It's a really good song. Again, great music video, too.
4. "My Immortal" - 5/5 stars - A beautiful song about loss. It's one of the most touching songs I've ever heard, and the lyrics are really catchy. The piano is also really pretty. The music video is good but the song by itself is great, too.
5. "Haunted" - 5/5 stars - At first I thought this song was eerie and kind of icky, but it grew on me. Now it's yet another of my favorites. I like all of the little breaks and special sound effects, especially when Amy carries the note from the rock chorus into a really pretty set of chords on the guitar. The choir sounds great in the background, too.
6. "Torniquet" - 4.5/5 stars - This song is about someone committing suicide and wondering if they're going to go to Heaven or not. It would be a disturbing song, except Amy makes it more musical with runs and octave-jumps. You also get to hear her infamous scream.
7. "Imaginary" - 4.5/5 stars - This song gets stuck in my head a lot. The lyrics look sugary..."In my field of paper flowers, and candy clouds of lullaby. I lie inside myself for hours, and watch my purple sky fly over me." But the song is actually really good. It's neat, too because rather than having the songs break, the violins from "Torniquet" go straight into "Imaginary".
8. "Taking Over Me" - 5/5 stars - I love this song! It sounds like a really great movie song that you would buy the movie album just to hear. It's deep, emotional, and dark but it has lots of little runs and eerie background vocals that make it even better. One of my favorite songs on the album.
9. "Hello" - 3.5/5 stars - This is a sad song about Amy's little sister passing away. The lyrics such as "Did no one tell you she's not breathing?" and "Don't try to fix me, I'm not broken." are really...I'd like to say catchy, but not catchy...I think well-written is the word. It's a slow song, but it shows off Amy's range a bit. Note that she can't sing it live for emotional reasons.
10. "My Last Breath" - 4.5/5 stars - The guitars in this song are really neat. The chords are catchy and fit perfectly with Amy's lyrics. It's a combination of beautiful and hard rock; a song about death.
11. "Whisper" - 5/5 stars - Another great song. The lyrics are catchy and just...flow. I like how it alternates between Amy's lead vocals and her whispering background vocals. There's also a choir in this one, too. For those of you who are confused about what they are chanting, they say: "Servatis a pereculum.
Servatis a maleficum." It is Latin, meaning: "Save us from danger (peril), save us from evil."
Overall, fantastic album. I doubt it will ever be surpassed on my favorite's list. I can't wait for their next album this August!
Song "Sunday Bloody Sunday"
I can't believe the news today
Oh, I can't close my eyes
And make it go away
How long...
How long must we sing this song?
How long? How long...
'cause tonight...we can be as one
Tonight...
Broken bottles under children's feet
Bodies strewn across the dead end street
But I won't heed the battle call
It puts my back up
Puts my back up against the wall
Sunday, Bloody Sunday
Sunday, Bloody Sunday
Sunday, Bloody Sunday
And the battle's just begun
There's many lost, but tell me who has won
The trench is dug within our hearts
And mothers, children, brothers, sisters
Torn apart
Sunday, Bloody Sunday
Sunday, Bloody Sunday
How long...
How long must we sing this song?
How long? How long...
'cause tonight...we can be as one
Tonight...tonight...
Sunday, Bloody Sunday
Sunday, Bloody Sunday
Wipe the tears from your eyes
Wipe your tears away
Oh, wipe your tears away
Oh, wipe your tears away
(Sunday, Bloody Sunday)
Oh, wipe your blood shot eyes
(Sunday, Bloody Sunday)
Sunday, Bloody Sunday (Sunday, Bloody Sunday)
Sunday, Bloody Sunday (Sunday, Bloody Sunday)
And it's true we are immune
When fact is fiction and TV reality
And today the millions cry
We eat and drink while tomorrow they die
(Sunday, Bloody Sunday)
The real battle just begun
To claim the victory Jesus won
On...
Sunday Bloody Sunday
Sunday Bloody Sunday...
