During the poison / 3
Now, don't think this is a review from some young kid that doesn't know anything about Marianne Faithfull. I've heard her previous stuff, so I know about her low, scratchy vocals. The thing is, though, when you have a voice like that, you have to sing over just the right material. And Before the Poison doesn't really showcase that.
J.E. Barnes' review is pretty accurate, but I'd like to say that the songs on here really aren't close to Marianne's best work. Many of the songs are lyrically challenged, especially "My Friends Have". In fact, it got to a point where I was starting to hope that "Last Song" was just that. And the biggest mistake on the album was the ridiculously overproduced "Desperanto". And if a song is that loud and she's STILL singing in a low voice, well, you really can't hear what she's saying. People may argue that she can't change her voice, and if that's the case, don't make loud songs!
Of course, if you're a devoted fan of Marianne Faithfull, like most of these reviewers appear to be, then you won't care what I'm saying anyway. Truthfully, though, only buy Before the Poison if you ARE one of those fans, because I think they are the only people that will really be able to appreciate it.

Song "House Of The Rising Sun (Version 2)"
There is a house in new orleans,
They call it the risin’ sun
And it’s been the ruin
Of many poor girl,
And me, oh god, I’m one.
If I had listened
To what my mother said
I’d have been at home today.
But I was young and foolish, oh god,
Let a rambler lead me astray.
Go tell my baby sister
Don’t do what I have done.
Go shun that house in new orleans
They call the risin’ sun.
Well, I’m going back to new orleans,
My race is almost run.
I’m going back to spend my life
In the house of the risin’ sun.
In the house of the risin’ sun.
In the house of the risin’ sun.
In the house of the risin’ sun.
The risin’ sun, the risin’ ...
