Here Comes the Storm / 5
This is the full-length 1999 debut disc from Broadzilla, a powerful whirlwind of metal/punk out of Detroit. Tasty metal riffs, yummy solos, punk attitude, and even Motown-influenced vocal harmonies combine with unforgiving lyrics about lyin' boyfriends and fake girlfriends, to showcase an up-and-coming combo ready to break out of the heavy Detroit scene. Singer/guitarist Rachel May has a knack for surprisingly swinging riffs, best heard in "Bondage Boy" and "Gestation of an Alien," while "Sometimes I" and "Storm" deliver relentless metal with hard-hitting introspection. The piledriving "Rubber Band" puts forth a bratty punk kiss-off to a music biz sleazebag with a sound that is infinitely more powerful than punk, while the album's best song, "White Trash Mom" should be a worldwide grrrl-group classic. May's guitar and vocal skills are backed up by skillful riffs from original bassist Michelle Chapman, and the nearly overwhelming neck-breaking beats from muscular drummer Angie Manly. This album serves as a great lead-in to Broadzilla's 2001 masterpiece Lady Luck. All music fans looking for a fun and powerful alternative to this era's whiny hard rock must discover the greatness of Broadzilla immediately. [~doomsdayer520~]
